In today's scenario and considering the mindset of people, I would say that what Dronacharya asked for is something not good. A Guru Dakshana is offered in return for the skills learnt from the Guru. If I were in Eklavya's position, I would have told Drona that I would give him Dhakshana by training and preaching Drona's skills to few more young archers. For a Guru, nothing is as great as to see his disciples perform equally or better than himself. Also it's a pride for a Guru, if his students takes his training to the next level by teaching some more disciple of his. A Guru should always be a stepping stone for his followers.
So, for Mahabharata to be be destined like that the events went on as per the order.
