If I were in the narrator's place I would have done the same as the narrator had done to cure tricky since Mr pumphrey was very ignorant and was not releasing the seriousness of  matter only his step was a left to take tricky out of the house.one must be very tactful and full of common sense while handling such a situation.  The narrator knew that tricki needed nothing else except plenty of exercise.

I would do the same as the narrator had done, but I take the step a little bit earlier. But I would do the same as narrator because only this step can cure tricky.
