A Zamboni does a lot more than just smooth the surface of the ice. It certainly does that, but only after it has cut a small bit of the existing surface off the old ice with a very sharp blade that sits in front of the auger that moves this shaved ice into the forward storage bin on a conveyor belt. It sometimes surprises people to learn that the water the Zamboni put down after cutting down the ice is actually hot. If it were cold, the new water would flash freeze and create a very rough skating surface. I drove one of these beasts for 2 years many years ago. It's a fascinating invention.
