when electricity is passed through an aqueous solution sodium chloride (called brine) it decomposes to form sodium hydrooxide (NaOH). this process is called chlor-alkali

When electricity is passed through aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) also known as brine solution, it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This process is called cholr-alkali process because of products formed chlor from chlorine and alkali from sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is given at anode and hydrogen at cathode, sodium hydroxide near cathode.
