I wouldn’t really see however and although as being essentially synonyms, as they wouldn’t generally be interchangeable.
However is similar to the word “but”. Examples of use:
I went to the shop for some cream. However, they were out of stock.
It can also be used in the following:
However you look at it, it’s a bad situation. (in whatever way you look at it)
Examples using although: ( which is generally used as a type of qualifier)
Although I was nervous, I went to the party.
I went to the shop for cream, although I knew they might be out of stock.
