At Hambledon Lock the narrator and his friends ran short of water; so George went to the lock-keeper and asked for some water. The lock-keeper offered him the river water. George was reluctant to take the river water; he wanted the pump water.
George was reluctant because once in the past they had tried river water to make tea at Windsor; after they had made tea and Jim taken a few sips of the tea, George had seen a dead dog floating in the river. So, the three friends had to throw their tea back into the river. After this incident they had never ever thought of using river water for drinking or cooking purposes.
