During free fall, the ball is in constant acceleration due to earth’s gravity.

Therefore, if there was no atmosphere on Earth then the ball would have accelerated constantly.

And yes, then the speed would have kept on increasing continuously.

But, the Earth has an atmosphere, which means that the ball experiences resistance from air.

When it speeds up, the force of drag also gets increased, until it can cancel the force of gravity altogether, this moment the ball will be in equilibrium, and will not get accelerated- it is thus known as terminal velocity.

 Therefore, the acceleration of the ball will get decreased when the speed increases
