When a body falls down , its mechanical energy is conserved.
Observing by taking ground as referrence level
Initially due to max. height it has max. potential energy , then it gains velocity eith decreasing height so otential energy decreases and kinetic energy increases. At the time just before it strikes ground , it has max. kinetic energy equal to the max potential energy and no potential energy.
