The work done by friction will be the friction force multiplied by displacement. Usually it happens only in Scenarios

1. where another force is continously acting on the object to move it further.

2. A force was acting in the past which made the object to move at a Speed and stopped acting on the object later. yet the object continued moving (decelerating).

In either case the work done by the friction is opposite to its Motion, and is usually negative.

Work done by any force is ist Magnitude times the displacement it caused.

In the present case where friction is doing work against the movement, it would be negative.
