Let the mass of the bullet be m and that of gun be M. Let the velocity of the bullet and the gun after firing be v and V respectively.

Well, the initial velocities of the gun and bullet each are 0 since the gun is fired at rest, thus their linear momentum before firing is zero. Hence the sum of their linear momentum is 0.

Final linear momentum, or momentum after firing, of the gun is P = MV and that of the bullet is p = mv.

By law of conservation of linear momentum, the sum of these two momenta will be equal to the sum of the initial momentum of the bullet and the gun, i.e.,

P + p = 0

MV + mv = 0

V = - mv / M

The negative sign in the RHS of the equation shows that the velocity of the gun is in opposite direction to that of the bullet, i.e., in backward direction. So the gun moves backward due to this velocity.

That's why the gun gives a kick in the backward direction.

HEYA MATE HERE U GO.

. This is due to the 'law of conservation of momentum ' . when a Bulket is fired from a gun , the momentum of the Gun becomes equ and opposite to that of Bullet.

. So , when the Bullet moves forward , the Gun kicks back.

. This motion of Gun is called Recoil of the gun.
