The copper displaces the silver as copper metal is more reactive than silver.

  • According to the reactivity series of metals, copper is more reactive than silver metal.
  • When keeping the copper wire in a solution of silver nitrate, the copper ions go into the solution and the silver gets deposited onto the copper.
  • What happed is a displacement of the metal ions and is known as displacement reaction.
  • That's why we see a colour change in the solution as copper nitrate is a bluish-green solution.
