when a cricket player catches the ball ,he pulls gradually in the direction of the ball's motion why?​

While catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder on the groundgradually pulls his hands backwards with the moving ball. This is done so that the fielder increases the time during which the high velocity of the moving balldecreases to zero.
