When a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field the wire experiences a force due to the interaction between the field and the magnetic field produced by the moving charges in the wire.

The current carrying conductor generates it own magnetic field around it. This  interracts with the external magnetic field. When two magnetic fields interact there will be attraction and repulsion between them based on the direction of the external magnetic field and the direction of the current in the conductor. That is why the conductor experiences a force.
