Ferns are leafy vascular plants.  

While they have veins allowing water flow and nutrients like conifers and flowering plants where their life cycle is different.  

Conifers and flowering plants emerged to survive hostile and dry conditions.  

Ferns needs water for sexual reproduction.

It helps to know parts of fern.

Fronds are leafy "branches" consisting of leaflets called pinnae.  

On underside of some pinnae are spots containing spores.  

Fronds that do have are called fertile fronds.
