When a gun is fired,the person handling the gun should immediately move in backward direction, why?

the person should move in backward direction because when we fire a gun it exerts a forward force on the bullet. the bullet exerts an equal and opp. reaction force. this is also known as recoil of the gun. By moving ourself back we can increase the time which can decrease the impact and it hurts less.
