When a Missile is launched with a velocity less than Escape velocity then it's Total Energy is ??

• Ans.) => Total energy will be = -ve ( negetive ) .

=> Due to as of Bound state .

Explanation behind this answer :---

Suppose the mass of missile is m and mass and send to earth in circular orbit " r " Earth is ' M ' and radius ' R ' ,, so kinetic energy of missile is -

• ( Actually we are calculating Total Energy ) •

=> Ek = 1/2 × m × v^2 (( here v = √G√M/√r ))

=> Kinetic Energy = Ek = 1/2× GMm/r

=> Now ,, the Potential Energy of missile = Ep = - GMm/r

Hence ,, the Total energy ( Et ) = Ek + Ep

➡ Et = 1/2 × GMm/r + ( - GMm/r )

➡ Total Energy ( Et ) = - GMm/2r

Hence ,, total energy = -ve .

=> -ve sign here shows that missile is bounded under gravitational force of earth.

Dear Student,

This question is irrelevant without corresponding options.

◆ Options -

(a) positive

(b) zero

(c) negative

(d) first (b) then (c)

● Answer -

(c) negative

● Explanation -

When satellite is launched with velocity less than escape velocity, it'll be bound in earths gravitational field. Thus it will have positive binding energy.

And we know,

Total energy = - Binding energy

Total energy = - (positive)

Total energy = negative

Total energy of satellite is negative.

Thanks dear...
