When the light travels from an optically denser medium to an optically less dense medium and the angle of incidence is greater than critical angle(42),there is no refracted ray, all the light is reflected bak into the denser medium. This is total internal reflection.
On other hand, when light travels from a less dense medium to a denser medium, refraction takes place most of the time unless the angle of incidence is 90 or enters with 90 degrees angle(no refraction or reflection takes place),there is no change in the direction of light ray.
