salt is known as rock salt because the mineral from which it is obtained, called halite is also known as rock salt. This mineral derives its name from the fact that when sediments containing this minerals dry up, they form masses of rock.

It is called rock salt when it is found in form of crystals and it is then mined like coal. Rock salt is formed by the crystallisation of sodium chloride (common salt). It is darker in colour due to impurities.
