When a sparingly soluble substance like alcohol is dissolved in water, surface tension of water _______________.

ANSSWER: decreases

EXPLANATION:

Surface tension occurs because of the cohesion of molecules. The decrease in surface tension of water is due to the differences in the hydrogen bonding of water and alcohol. Because of the water’s strong hydrogen-bonding, the surface tension of water is higher than the surface tension of the alcohol. When a soluble substance dissolves in water, the molecules of that substance keeps the water molecules from being attracted to other water molecules, therefore decreasing the strength of the water's surface tension.

When a sparingly soluble substance like alcohol is dissolved in water surface tension of water decreases.

Explanation:

  • Surface tension refers to the liquid surface property which allows it to resist an external force exerted on it.
  • Surface tension varies based on the temperature , impurities present in a liquid and solubility of the substances.
  • The substances that are less soluble in water is called as sparingly soluble substances.  Example : Soap and Alcohol
  • Normally, water has high surface tension.
  • When alcohol is added to the water, the water molecules starts to react with that.
  • Due to the hydrophobic nature, the alcohol occupies the surface of water.
  • It results in decreased surface tension.
