A Substance can be said to be a gas if :

(1) It has no definite shape and volume.

(2) Its molecules are in ceaseless chaotic motion.

(3) Its density is least as compared to solids and liquids.

(4) It can be easily compressible.

(5) It can diffuse anywhere.

(6) It exerts pressure equally in all directions other than liquids.

(7) It expands to a large extent on heating and contracts to a large extent on cooling.

(8) Its intermolecular space is very large and its intermolecular force is almost negligible or is extremely weak.

(9) It can be liquefied.
