In reaction , hydrogen loses one electron. Hydrogen is oxidized, thus making it the reducing agent. An element that is oxidized is a reducing agent, because the element loses electrons, and an element that is reduced is an oxidizing agent, because the element gains electrons.

During a reaction when oxygen is removed or hydrogen is added or an electron is added to a particular compound it is reduced substance
Example:CuO+H2----Cu+H2O
Since oxygen is being removed from CuO,it is reduced
