An unpolarized light has random orientation of electric field vector in the oscillating plane of electric field. When such unpolarized light is allowed to pass through a polarizer, the pass axis of the polarizer will cause unidirectional oscillation of the electric field in the transmitted light. Therefore, the transmitted light becomes plane polarized light with its intensity reduced to half.
