The President exercises his discretion under the following circumstances:
The President invites the leader of the majority party or a coalition to form the government. However, if no party or a coalition has secured a majority , it is here the President exercises his/her discretion to invite a person whom he thinks can muster majority support in the Lok Sabha to form the government. The President may then ask the newly appointed Prime Minister to prove his majority on the floor of the house within a specified time.
