They covered the distance between Sabarmati Ashram and Dandi in 25 days and reached the coast of Dandi on 6th April 1930 where by picking up a handful of salt, Gandhi broke the salt laws and launched the mass Civil Disobedience Movement.

The three reasons for which the  Civil Disobedience movement is called as Mass movement are as follows :-

  • With the spread of the movement , foreign cloth was boycotted and liquor shops were picketted . Peasants refused to pay revenue and chaukidari taxes .                                                                                   Village officials resigned from their post .Forest people violated forest law .They went into Reserved forests to collect wood and graze cattle .

  • In the countryside , rich peasant communities , Patidar of  Gujarat and the Jats of Uttar Pradesh became the supporters of the Civil Disobedience Movement .They inspired their communities , sometime forced the reluctant members to participate in the boycott programmes .

  • The poor peasantry , often lead by the socialist and the communist , joined a variety of radical movements for the remission of their unpaid rent to the landlords .
