The modern novel form developed in India in the 19th century as Indian became familier with the western novel. some of the earliest Indian novels written in Bengali and Marathi.
Bhudeb Mokhopadhyay's Anguriya Binimoy (1857) was the first historical novel written in Bengal . In this novel Shivaji engaged in many battles against a clever and the treacherous Aurangzeb.
