To answer your questions, rainbows are generally formed whenever it is raining.

  1. Rainbows are formed during rains, as the droplets in the air reflect, refract, and most importantly, disperse the sunlight entering the atmosphere.
  2. This means that the white sunlight is broken down into its constituent colours forming a spectrum of 7 seven colours(VIBGYOR) by the droplets in the air. This is exactly why rainbows are formed in a direction opposite to that of the sun.
