from the 1860, the railway network expand rapidly. by 1890, about 25500 km of track has been laid . in 1946 the length of the track has increased over 765000km. as the railway tracks spread through India . larger and larger number of trees were felled. the government gave out contracts to individual to supply the required quality of timber. the contractor began cutting trees indiscriminately. forest around the railway tracks fast started disappearing.
