The kingdom of kalinga controlled trade with Southeast Asia. So capturing it was of great importance to Ashoka. He defeated Raja Anantha Padmanabhan in the war. The kalinga war was also the turning point of Ashoka's life. After the war, he saw that many soldiers and common people died. We vowed to never wage war again and took up Buddhism.
