As to my knowledge , humans have evolved on earth and they wanted a reason to know their real identity . This led to the race of discoveries and evolution of science . I'm no bel - esprit but see , acid and base is a concept defined by us . We defined the term as it is . We named something which donates H+ as acid and something which donates OH- as base . It could have been any other name . So exactly , acid and base is a property and hence there's no such proof was there . It was just , that there are some compounds which donate H+ in water and all of them had similar properties and hence they were called acids . Same was the reason for bases .
