when Bengal is in east, then why it is called west Bengal

During independence Bengal was divided into two parts mainly due to religious lines. the western part of Bengal went to India while the eastern part when to Pakistan (which is now recocgnised as Bangladesh).
This is why West Bengal is called as WEST Bengal even though it's in east.
