The First Law of Motion .

Newton's first Law of Motion states that an object will continue its state of rest or of uniform motion unless an external force acts on the body .

Take the example of a body at rest . Suppose a book is lying in the table and the book is in rest position .

The book will never change its motion unless any external force is applied to it .

If you hold the book and then pick it up , then an external force is acting on the book and hence the state of rest of the book is changing to the state of motion .

Similarly an object if at motion will move in uniform motion if no external force is present .

However friction acting as an external force tends to slow down the object .
