when calcium metal is added to water the gas evolved does not catch fire but the same gas evolved on adding sodium metal to water catches fire . why is it so?

It is mainly based on the hydration enthalpy. Since calcium has much large size so its hydration enthalpy is less on the other hand sodium has large hydration enthalpy. Means large amt of heat is released when u put sodium in water.
