Sound travels when the vibration of body occurs.

But how do these vibration reach our ears?

This is the reason for some existence of medium.

If there is a medium then the vibrations of the molecules can be passed on to the next set of molecules hence causing a chain reaction until it hits our eardrums.

If there were no medium then the sound vibration will only vibrate around their place and therelated are no other molecules to receive this vibrations for us to hear.

Hope it helps.
