Basically, Carbon forms covalent bonds in majority of compounds. It doesn't mean that it has lost its electrons to the atom to which it is bonded to - rather it shares its electrons so as to get noble gas configuration.

Oxidation state is a hypothetical number assigned to each atom in a molecular structure (refer this) which assumes all bonds to be purely ionic. So it doesn't mean that that the carbon atoms in C2H2CX2HX2 having an oxidation state of −1−1 have gained 11 electron each to result in 5 electrons in the valence shell.
