Given :  Lewis can buy a single carton of juice for 45p. he can buy a pack of 4 cartons for £1.56. Lewis buys all the cartons for the least   possible amount of money

To find : how much did he spend

Solution:

He wanted to buy  38 carton of juice

Single carton of juice cost  = 45p = £ 0.45

pack of 4 carton cost   = £1.56

38 = 4 * 9  + 2

Hence he will buy  9 pack of 4 cartons   & 2 single carton of juice

Cost = 9 * 1.56  +  2(0.45)

= 14.04 + 0.9

= £14.94

Lewis spent £14.94
