Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a state of emergency for 21 months from 25th June 1975 to 21st March 1977  across the country. It was officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution because of the ongoing internal disturbance . Elections were suspended  and civil liberties were curbed. During this period most of Gandhi's political opponents were imprisoned and the press was censored. Several other human rights violations were reported during this period.
