Patna lawn was renamed Gandhi Maidan shortly after the death of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. He was killed by Nathuram Godse and his accomplices due to ideological differences they had with Gandhiji.

Initially, Patna lawn was named after the capital of the Indian state of Bihar. The maidan has been the centrepoint of many rallies in the past few decades. It was the site from where Mohammed Ali Jinnah delivered a stirring speech against the Congress. In recent times it made news, when bombs went off as the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was addressing a rally in 2013.

The naming of Patna lawn was a tribute to Gandhiji after his assassination in the year 1948. The naming of Patna lawn as Gandhi Maidan was done in the same year of his assassination.

The statue of Gandhiji has also been erected in the southern corner of maidan in the 90s.

In 2013, another statue has been built in the north western corner of the maidan.
