He received revelation when he was meditating in the cave of hira. He was 40 years old at that time and it was the end of Ramadan when one day an Angel came in form of a man and asked him to read. Prophet saw replied that he can't read. Angel asked him once again and Prophet saw 's reply was the same. The third time, the Angel hugged Prophet saw tightly and recited the first five verses of Surah Al Alaq. This time the Prophet saw recited his words and felt as if these words were imprinted on his heart. Prophet saw was greatly shaken by the experience and this marked the first revelation to Prophet Mohammad SAW
