Liberia and Sierra Leone became independent black countries following Haiti on January 1, 1904, becoming the second and third of only three countries founded by former slaves. United States Ambassador to Liberia or Haiti was a coveted position.
Despite the Reconstruction Amendments giving citizenship to all those born in the United States, and suffrage (the right to vote) to all men, Blacks remained second class citizens, and in some places were prevented from voting by violence.
