The ancient Mesopotamians (area near Iraq around 4000 years ago) invented formal writing, mathematics and schools (possibly even homework). Upper class children would live with masters and be taught alongside each other, performing basic duties for their hosts.

Many boarding schools in the U.K. and elsewhere can claim 600 years or more of continuous education in the more modern structure, however.
