We say that the work has been done when we apply energy that produces a displacement in the object in the direction of force.

Here,
work ∝ force and work ∝ displacement
So, we can say that work is done when :
a) A force of certain magnitude acts on body
b) the body is displaced from it's initial point due to action of force.
