'The Lapwing' by Meera Uberoi describes the cry of a lapwing just before the dawn when the night is shrouded by absolute gloom and silence. No wind swishes mulberry leaves and no Firefly glimmers in the dark of the night. The stars are hidden by clouds and dew drops settle on thorns. The poetess wonders why the solitary lapwing cries so miserably and associates its cry with loss and ache.

The lapwing comes out in the night after the dawn has gone. It is quite silent when the lapwing makes its appearance.

The whole place appears as if it is a deserted tomb. There are dew drops on the thorns and the stars are hidden by the clouds. With no wind, it is quite still and the fireflies are roaming about free. It is at this time, the silence is broken by the cry of the lapwing.
