KMnO4 acts as an oxidising agent in alkaline medium. When alkaline KMnO4 is treated with KI, iodide ion is oxidised to IO3-.

In acidic medium, the iodide will oxidize to molecular iodine:

2MnO4- + 10 I- + 16H+ -> 2Mn2+ + 5 I2 + 8H2O
