India was an idea that existed in the minds of the West, as heard from ancient travellers and conquering forces. It was, as they saw it, the land beyond the Indus, which was called the Sindhu by the locals and Hindu by the Persians who did not have the 'S' sound in their alphabet. So, technically India or Hindustan was named by the Persians for the lands beyond the river. It was fabled to be the most civilised, well maintained and richest land of the time, other than Rome/ Greece. Everyone coveted the riches of the land, and the British were finally able to take it. The Hindus were all people to the East of the Indus regardless of religion, caste, creed or colour according to the Persians and others over time.
Before the British, there wasn't really a united India, and the term India did may not have included the nation we know it as. South India and the North East was not controlled by any unifying force through history. There had always been smaller kingdoms paying tribute to larger ones and warring among castes clans and princes. The British were the first to control the entire Indian subcontinent and the idea of India was put on a map. We have the British to thank for a common identity, even though the concept of India did exist before. The British made us stand up and fight for the common cause of a nation and that can never be taken away from us now.
hope it helps.
