A research is generally conducted when a theory has been postulated. The aim of the research is purely about testing theories, usually produced by pure science, and implementing them to real situations, addressing more than just the abstract principles.  

Research is an instrument by which the scientist can test their own and others theories. The aim of the research is generally an ongoing procedure of refining and correcting hypothesis that should result in the acceptance of some kind of scientific truths.
