When magnesium ribbon is placed in sulfuric acid, a chemical reaction takes place and heat energy is given off.
Liang and Naranbaatar are planning an investigation into the effect of the length of magnesium ribbon on the increase in temperature. They decide to carry out some preliminary work.
Explain what preliminary work they could do and how this would help them plan their investigation.

Answer:

Magnesium reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid in a conical flask which is connected to an inverted measuring cylinder in a trough of water. The volume of hydrogen gas produced is measured over a few minutes, and the results are used to plot a graph

Magnesium metal dissolves readily in dilute sulphuric acid to form solutions containing the aquated Mg(II) ion together with hydrogen gas, H2. Corresponding reactions with other acids such as hydrochloric acid also give the aquated Mg(II) ion.

Preliminary work should be done taken by Liang and Naranbaatar while investigate how the length of a magnesium ribbon affects the temperature rise that occurs when that ribbon is submerged in sulfuric acid

  • By heating water to a boil in a beaker and then submerging sulfuric acid in the heated water until the acid reached the desired temperature as indicated by the thermometer, sulfuric acid was heated.
  • Check to make sure the acid was the right strength and the ribbon was 8 cm.
  • The most accurate way to measure the sulfuric acid was in a measuring cylinder, after which it was put into a conical flask, its temperature can be measured using a thermometer, and it was decided whether to raise or lower the temperature.
  • Heat a beaker of water to raise the temperature before adding the sulfuric acid to the conical flask to heat it. You will discover that doing it this way was safer than simply heating the acid on a bunsen burner.
  • When the temperature was right,  insert the magnesium ribbon and put the rubber bung—which was attached to a gas syringe—on the flask right away. The greatest tool for measuring gas is a gas syringe because of its high level of accuracy.
  • Always use goggles to protect my eyes and an apron to ensure that any experiment is safe. If one gets acid on hands, wash them. secure the gas syringe with a string to prevent the end from coming loose.
  • The gas syringe will be secured with a clamp so that it cannot drop to the ground. Put down a safety mat to stop anything from burning. Tidy up the desk by removing any clutter and pull my hair back.

Liang and Naranbaatar can conduct an efficient inquiry by taking the aforementioned first measures.
