Kl reacts with HgI₂ to form a complex as
2Kl + HgI₂ -----> K₂[HgI₄] --(ionizes)--> (2K⁺ + 2I⁻) 2 K⁺ + HgI₄²⁻
Thus, number of ions decreases in the solution. Hence, depression in freezing point is less actual freezing point is raised.
