MgCl2.6H2O undergoes partial hydrolysis by its own water molecules of crystallisation when heated. MgCl2.6H2O upon heating gives MgCl2.2H2O and then Mg(OH)Cl or MgOCl + HCl which upon strong heating gives MgO.
