When my servant brings water in a pitcher, she places a thick piece of cloth on her head before placing pitcher. Why?

It prevents her from getting burnt and helps her to carry t nice and steady really basic so i hope this helped by the way im just a 12 yr old girl in a MASSIVE country :)
