When my servant brings water in a pitcher, she places a thick piece of cloth on her head before placing pitcher. Why?

I think she keeps that thick cloth on her head to balance the pitcher.It stays stable becz when its is kept on our head directly our head is round so it may fall of.So she rounds the cloth in a shape to hold the pitcher exactly.....
